A rainy day in the centre

The Book of Kells and Archaeology fit a day about manuscripts and Irish craftsmanship. Choose the Gallery for painting, using its Clare Street entrance for the Millennium Wing café. The permanent collection is free, and its audio interpretation works with your own headphones.

Archaeology has no cloakroom service and large bags do not belong in the galleries. Leave suitcases at the hotel. Its Sunday and Monday opening at 1 pm makes an afternoon visit the simpler option on those days.

An indoor afternoon west of the centre

Guinness provides a mostly self-guided exhibition and Gravity Bar. Kilmainham tells prison and independence history on a fixed guided tour, but the building is very cold in winter. It is a history visit rather than a warm place to wait out the rain.

For a wet-weather replacement for Howth, choose a collection whose subject interests the group. Caravaggio, Vermeer and Yeats offer a painting visit; the Treasury and bog-body displays offer Irish archaeology.

During the Castle and Chester Beatty closures

Both are closed through December 2026, including the Castle grounds. Trinity and Archaeology are the manuscript alternatives; the Gallery is the painting choice. Keep walks on public streets around the Castle rather than using its closed passage.

The Gallery’s Atrium Creative Space is closed 2–16 November, and security restrictions on 12 November affect Gallery access. These are narrower dates than the Castle closure and should not be treated as a permanent closure of the collections.
